Are you looking for all the information about the Pitta Dosha? Here you’ll find all the information you need about the Pitta Dosha.

In Ayurveda, each dosha has their own functions, and purposes. When you take your Ayurvedic dosha test, you’ll discover which doshas are prevalent in your body and which doshas play a bigger part in your body type and personality type. It’s important to remember though – that all three doshas are present in all of us, and all our bodies – in different quantities. So even if you’re not a Pitta body type, you’ll still need to learn about the function of the Pitta dosha within the body, as it’ll help you understand how your body functions.

When there is fire, there has to be water to keep the fire from burning everything. When these two elements combine, the resulting energy is known as Pitta dosha. Pitta has all the qualities of firewater – sharp, penetrating, liquid, hot, light, mobile, oily, smelly. It is the transformative energy that rules all kinds of biochemical changes in the body.

Anything that needs to be processed or converted from one form to another is the working of fire energy. Without Pitta, the food we consume will not be converted into energy, and our body will run out of fuel. There will be no hormones to rule emotions.

So what exact functions are performed by Pitta dosha in the body, what happens when Pitta dosha dominates?

Functions of Pitta dosha

When chemical change is happening, Pitta is at work. Breaking down of food, secretion of enzymes, digestive juices, conversion into energy, assimilation of nutrients, transformation into tissues, production, and regulation of hormones are all ruled by Pitta. It is the primary force required for the digestion of food and the processing of raw information.

The main function of the Pitta dosha are:

  • Digesting food
  • Fuelling agni
  • Producing blood
  • Colouring the skin
  • Providing intelligence
  • Prodviding self confidence
  • Providing sight

The Pitta dosha breaks down, understands, organizes, and then assimilates all the incoming pieces of information, ideas, experiences, and feelings of daily life. Pitta gives focus and intelligence to the mind and is responsible for intensifying emotions. This dosha provides sharp eyesight, good appetite, and good metabolism.

When Pitta is out of balance

When aggravated, Pitta starts producing too much of digestive juices, hormones, enzymes that manifest as diarrhoea, heartburn, acid reflux, ulcers, acne, rashes, boils, heavy menstruation, hormonal imbalances, bleeding disorders, and inflammation. Their skin starts producing too much oil in warm environments.

Their digestive system goes from robust to delicate, and almost everything they eat tends to give them diarrhoea or hyperacidity. An imbalanced Pitta interferes with sleep and gives them frequent dream interruptions during nights.
